Veterinary surgeon Dr Lisa Argilla examines an emperor penguin nicknamed “Happy Feet”, at Wellington Zoo. Usually found in Antarctica, the penguin attracted worldwide media attention when it arrived on a New Zealand beach a week ago. It underwent surgery on Monday at Wellington Zoo to remove sand and sticks from its stomach.
A nightjar is captured by a photographer as it swoops down to the surface of a pond to quench its thirst. The sight was captured on camera by Scott Linstead, using special motion sensor technology. He had set up an infrared beam at the pond, in Amado, Arizona, which automatically tripped the camera flash when it sensed movement.
